[Bobby's outside, holding the journal facing towards him with one hand and tossing a snowball with the other.]

I promise this is not my fault! I had absolutely nothing to do with this.

[Not that anyone except for maybe two people would have any reason to suspect him. But he's too used to having to give a disclaimer every time snow comes when it probably shouldn't have.]

But since it is here and awesome, I am totally taking advantage of it.

Does anyone like ice skating? Someone go skating with me, guys!

[There's a pause as he throws the snowball high up into the air and lets it fall back to the ground.]

Or if we can get enough people, I am all in for a game of snow capture the flag.

[It is SNOWING, and Bobby is the happiest mutant ever right now. Reply here or come bug him outside? He's wandering around all over, so if it's some place outside, feel free to run into him there.]

Huh?

*He looks back to Bobby, leaving the glasses up on his forehead.*

No, I just don't want to break them, they're my only pair left.

[And his question is totally answered when Sollux turns to look back at him without lowering the glasses. But still.]

That's really cool. The guy I kno - knew, who could do that, he couldn't control it. He had to wear special glasses to keep it contained.

*Sollux snickers a bit at the idea that someone else had to use something to control his eyebeams. Even mutated humans were weaker.*

You know a lot of people who can do things like that?

Yeah, I do. But I'm a bit of a special case, I guess. I went to a school for people with powers, a place that helped us learn how to use them. Most of my friends back home can do things like that, but it's not like that for most people in my world.

*He raises an eyebrow and pushes his glasses back down over his eyes.*

You have people to teach each other how to do stuff like that?

[He nods.]

Usually people are really young when they get their powers, and have no idea how to use them. Some of them need training, to learn how to use their powers. Or not use them, sometimes.

No one teaches you how to use your powers in your world?

No...you just kind of learn or you don't.

*He doesn't add that "or you don't" tends to mean you get yourself killed. That seems like the obvious result to Sollux.*

Oh. That kind of sucks.

I guess it's like that for some in my world, too, though. We're the only school like us that I know of.

What's a school, anyway?

[By now, Bobby's used to getting questions like that. Especially today, people seem to just keep asking him about things he's always taken for granted and has to actually pause to think about how to explain it. At least this is much better than trying to figure out how to explain what snow is.]

Uh. It's a place you go when you're young, to learn things that will supposedly help you make it in the world when you grow up. Teach you skills that you'll need to get a job and stuff, plus just things like history that people thinks everyone should know.

Mine's a bit different from a normal school, because we teach all of that plus powers training.

*Huh. Humans sure were weird.*

Do all humans go to these things or just the special ones?

Pretty much everyone does. Or at least they have some sort of equivalent, where they're taught things by their elders, or something.

Your world doesn't have anything like that?

*Sollux shakes his head.*

All the adults were offworld, we were pretty much on our own if we wanted to learn anything.
Well, and our lususes, but mine was kind of useless.

[His brows furrow a bit in confusion.]

What're lususes? And you don't have any adults on your world at all?

Our guardians. And no, not really, they're all busy.

[All right, he can get the whole guardian thing.]

Dude, seriously? What could keep them all so busy that they're not on your world at all?

Expanding the empire.

*Which he actually sounds rather bored about.*

[Bobby makes a bit of a face.]

What are they, the Romans? Even they left adults behind in their original empire when they were off expanding.

[And as soon as he's said it, he realizes Sollux probably won't get the reference.]

Never mind. That's just - kind of a lame reason.

The what?

...how is that a lame reason?

*He's not offended, just confused.*

The Romans. They're, uh, an ancient empire on Earth. They were always out expanding the empire, and they had one of the biggest before they finally got taken down.

[He shrugs slightly, feeling vaguely guilty for saying that. It's not like Sollux is from Earth, after all, Bobby shouldn't be expecting the adults there to act like they are.]

It just seems like if you're going to leave your kids on your world with no adults at all, it should be for a better reason than making the empire bigger. Saving the world, or something.

*He shrugs.*

I don't know, its just how things were.

[And Bobby's totally just going to take this opportunity to stop talking about how Sollux's people have lame reasons for doing things.]

Yeah. It's weird how different everyone's worlds seem to be. I've met a ton of people with powers and stuff, but none of them are mutants.

*Sollux frowns.*

I'm a mutant, but that's not why I can do what I do. Not all of it, at least.

*It explained the voices and dreams, and possibly eyebeams, but not the psychokenisis.*

[And he brightens a little bit there.]

You are? Cool!

Why can you do what you do, then?

*Hmph.*

Its not cool.

*Sollux shrugs. He never really cared to look into why some trolls had powers.*

Sometimes trolls are just physic or something like it.
